What's an ORT Jar?

In a conversation about how much thread we save or don't save I mentioned that I kept an ORT Jar. So here is a picture of my ORT Jar which I've been filling with my left over scraps, remnants, and snippets of thread. I started putting them in this jar about five years ago for no particular reason other than if looked cool sitting on my stitching desk. Every time I look at it I remember a particular project or finish and it gives me a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Of course as you can see I didn't stop there and also started collecting the little tabs from the DMC floss. Did I mention my hobby is an "obsession." LOL!

I knew you would show these...or I was hoping you would, I noticed your DMC papers before when you've shown pictures of your Stitching Area! LOL! And when I saw "ORT JAR" I figured it would be similar.
I think it's a fabulous collection Milly :0) Lets us all know what a rabid cross stitcher you are ;)

I too have an ort jar. I thought all stitchers did. LOL I have also read about ort ornaments that I want to try one day. Take a clear ornament and fill it with orts. Sounds like a neat idea.

LOL! I'm thinking I have far more threads than that and I know you stitch a lot more than I.
Oh, I love the ort ornament idea suggested by another reader! Milly we need to do this!

I was just asking a friend what "ort" stood for, she did not know...do you know? :)
Thanks!

I keep an ort jar too but I empty it on New Year's Day each year. I never thought to keep the floss wrappers!

I have ORTs too but I didn't stop there. I also save smaller and smaller pieces of fabric. I used them to make a new piece of fabric.

Milly,
I, too, have an ort jar, but mine says "Snip-its" and has dolphins on it as well. Kathy Bradford made mine for me. It looks like a little pottery jar. There is a picture of it in my March 3rd blog post.

I've also heard of filling the clear glass balls and making ornaments out of them with the year's snip-its in them. I haven't decided what to do with mine, but I'm leaning towards cutting them up in tiny pieces and leaving them outside for the birds to nest with.

Hugs & stitches,
Beth

funny you collect the band on your fiber skeins! As I use up a skein, I would put them in a container -- as soon as I got wind of a floss sale, I'd grab them & buy replacements : )
Easy way for me to be reminded of what was used up!

This is so cool Miss Milly!! I never would have thought of this, but I love how you've used the left-overs to create something interesting.
